DATA PRIVACY (Data Practices)

ISD#192 -Farmington Public Schools, Farmington, MN, USA

Overview

ISD#192 Board Policy designates student address and telephone number as private information. This information is not released in response to outside requests for data. Student name is public and is released upon request. All requests are, by law, handled in the same manner .... public information is released and private information is not.

The new law makes an exception for military recruiters. They are allowed to receive address and telephone number in spite of the fact that districts may have designated one or both of these fields as private; that is, NOT directory information. Therefore, parents and eligible students must complete a form specifically refusing the release of information to the military in order to keep address and telephone number private.

Law Change - Effective August 1, 2001

Actual Law from State Revisors Office

ISD#192 Policy

ISD#192 is in the process of amending its data practices policy, including all associated forms, to reflect the recent law change and to accommodate parents/eligible students who wish to keep address and telephone number private. The first reading of this policy will occur on August 13th. On August 27th the Board will vote as to whether to adopt the updated policy.

The updated policy was approved on August 27th.  The forms currently in policy do not address the military recruiting law that became effective August 1, 2001.
