NTES 4th Graders Build Bridges

NTES 4th graders are getting a special visit from Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) this week, as they begin their bridges unit with Ms. Bellmont.

Nicole Bartelt, STEM Education and Outreach Coordinator and Hydraulic Engineer for MnDOT, will be coming to each NTES 4th grade science hour this week to teach students about the construction process of MN bridges and transportation systems. After a quick Bridge UP! lesson, students are assigned roles on the project team, complete with a project manager, safety inspector, materials and supply team and construction and deconstruction teams. They then work as a class to build a 6-foot truss bridge - learning the purpose of each material and technique along the way.

MnDOT worked with Grand Rapids High School students to design and manufacture ten of these bridge sets that are now being used for interactive presentations around the state. They serve as a great way to introduce engineering to students, and familiarize them with MnDOT’s important work.

Great work, 4th Graders! Check Facebook for photos!
