December Healthy Hero

Congratulations to Akin Road Elementary School’s 3rd grade classes taught by Becca Gangl, Dana Nicolai, and Molly Smith for being named the Farmington Area Public Schools Healthy Hero for the month of December! These classes were nominated for learning how to integrate Yoga Calm into their classrooms. The teachers first heard about the Yoga Calm program from an old colleague who recommended it to them. They attended a training class last spring where they learned how to creatively integrate yoga-based movement, breathing techniques, mindfulness practices and social/emotional skill-development activities into their work in the classroom. The exercises are based on five principles: Stillness, Listening, Strength, Grounding, and Community. Later the students and teachers received additional training with a yoga instructor from 1000 Petals who joined the classes for six 30 minute sessions.

“We have noticed students using the routines to help calm themselves down independently. Students have also learned how to genuinely compliment one another,” said Ms. Gangl. It has been inspiring for coworkers to see how implementing breathing, stretching, strengthening, and awareness exercises throughout the day can improve overall wellness. For anyone looking to add a similar practice to their day, the teachers recommend starting small and doing what you’re comfortable with.
