Todd Kohorst, a Science Teacher at Boeckman Middle School, has been named the Minnesota State Teacher of the Year by the Air Force Association (AFA). The stated purpose of the AFA Teacher of the Year program is "to recognize classroom teachers at the state level for their accomplishments and achievements in exciting K-12 students about science and math (STEM) and preparing them to use and contribute to tomorrow’s technologies." Kohorst has brought a great deal of excitement to his classroom.
In addition to coaching the FHS Science Olympiad Team, which recently went to the state competition for the first time in school history, Kohorst took it upon himself to learn about project POSSUM – Polar Suborbital Science in the Upper Mesosphere – through NASA’s Flight Opportunities program. He applied and was accepted to the project where he underwent flight and basic astronaut training. According to Boeckman Middle School Principal Dan Miller, "Todd brings his space flight suit into his classroom. His students think it is cool to have a teacher undergoing space training. He brings what he learns into his classroom.… Todd Kohorst is an excellent educator in every sense of the word. He is bright, creative, energetic, and truly passionate about cutting edge aerospace study and exploration. He thrives on transferring his experiences to his students which significantly benefits their learning of the fundamentals of science in his classroom."
We are proud to have Mr. Kohorst as a Farmington Area Public Schools teacher.
