Elementary School Read-A-Thon

Students at North Trail and Farmington Elementary Schools have been celebrating I Love to Read Month by working with their teachers, classmates and families to promote reading and raise money for literacy programs at each school. Throughout the month, students have asked for donations and in return have pledged to read 120 minutes at the school-wide Read-A-Thon, the month’s capstone reading event.

Farmington Elementary celebrated the Read-A-Thon by turning the front entrance of the school into a Tiger Tail Cafe - a place where students got the chance to hang out and read during the month. On Friday morning, they welcomed magician Brian Richards to their all-school assembly, where he performed his show “Kids Who Read Are Cool”. Here, Ms. Bollesen also announced the classes and students from each grade who raised the most money and awarded the top raising student the chance to tag along with her as the Principal for the day. Afterwards, students retreated to their classrooms and took part in reading activities with their teachers and classmates.

North Trail Elementary celebrated the Read-A-Thon by starting the morning with a “Charlie and the Book Factory” skit put on by the teachers. After the skit, all students and building staff sat in the gym and read together for 15 minutes. After the reading session, students were dispersed into their classes and were guided in various reading activities for the remainder of the day. School Board Chair Melissa Sauser and Principal Geis, fully dressed in his Dr. Geis and the Book Factory costume, popped into each grade and read books aloud to the students.

Thank you teachers, staff, parents and families for your support during I Love to Read Month! All money raised through this initiative will go directly to summer reading programs, school book rooms, classroom libraries and other literacy enrichment for students.
