MN Author Visits FES

Local Minnesota author and illustrator, David LaRochelle, visited Farmington Elementary School today to speak with all grades about his journey to becoming a published author of 30 books and counting!

This visit is helping to kick off the FES Readathon happening this month. The purpose of the Readathon is to get students excited about reading, and encourage them to explore all the possibilities the world of literature opens up to them. Through different Readathon activities and events, FES staff hopes to raise money to provide experiences and opportunities just like this to students on a more regular basis.

Each grade level sat down with Mr. LaRochelle for 45 minutes in the library, as he shared his story to success with them. He showed students the 198 rejection letters from editors he has received along the way, and gave them a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of his book, The Best Pet of All. From images of his at-home workspace and how he gets into the writing mindset, to finalizing the illustrations that brought his words to life, students and teachers saw first hand the hard work and dedication that goes into being an author.

Mr. LaRochelle worked with the students impromptu ideas to create a unique short story with each grade level, allowing them to collaborate as a class and teaching them the importance of detail and creativity. As they were encouraged to add to the storyline, LaRochelle guided the story by designing illustrations right in front of their eyes.
