Congratulations to Kristi Huettl, a GEL Teacher at Meadowview and Farmington Elementary Schools, on being selected as the January 2018 Healthy Hero!

Kristi was nominated for her dedication to integrating mindfulness into the classroom as well as her general passion for health, fitness and well-being! She loves to explore all different kinds of yoga and works everyday to live a balanced, healthy lifestyle.

According to Doris McNamara, Kristi’s colleague at FES, this healthy mentality is nothing new for her friend.

“Kristi has always been a fitness person, it is a great passion of hers.”

In her 20’s, Kristi worked at a fitness center where she could be surrounded by people that share her same passions. This led her to incorporate fitness into her future jobs as well. When she worked full-time at a credit union, Kristi would stay after-hours to teach aerobics to her co-workers just for fun! Now, it’s not unusual for staff members around the FES and MES buildings to turn to her with questions about yoga. She happily gives them advice on what yoga is and where they can join a class.

Currently, Kristi is working on becoming a certified yoga instructor. This involves nine months of very intense training and the reading of seven books. She also spends full weekends in yoga retreats and classes to prepare for this new teaching role she is taking on.

Kristi was also instrumental in Farmington Elementary School receiving a grant to implement Yoga Calm in some of their classrooms. Thanks to her hard work, and the help of a whole team of staff dedicated to this initiative, training will begin in August and full implementation of Yoga Calm in FES classrooms will begin at the start of next school year.

In the meantime, Kristi continues to use Mindful Games Activity Cards with her students to give them a break from a technology focused world. She believes it is important for students to take time to learn and simply focus on mindfulness so they don’t become over stimulated or stressed.

Good work, Kristi!
