Caroline Bussmann, a teacher at Riverview Elementary School, was chosen as the Farmington Area Public Schools Healthy Hero for March 2019! Caroline was nominated by her colleague Beth Schneider for her dedication to pursuing lifelong fitness.

Caroline’s fitness journey began in her teen years when she was an avid athlete, competing in volleyball, basketball and even one season of golf. She was also a strong swimmer, earning her lifeguard certification. In college she played co-ed volleyball and wallyball recreationally, but as time went on health challenges arose. “Things went to a different level after our second child was born,” wrote Caroline, “I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes while pregnant.  After Maddie arrived, it was discovered that I had high cholesterol and was prediabetic. My doctor told me I needed to take charge.”

To meet this new challenge, Caroline took up running. “It was a slow start,” she wrote. She began by alternating between walking and running until eventually she felt ready to try a 5K and then half-marathons and 10 mile runs. “My favorite run was when our daughter, Claire, decided she wanted to run a 10 miler. We trained for the TC10 together when she was 14,” Caroline wrote.

Seven years ago, Caroline was training to run the Monster Dash when she tore her meniscus. During her recovery she began lifting weights. “I also was told that for each pound of weight I carried, it put 4 pounds of pressure on my knees. Through weight lifting during my recovery, I was able to drop weight so that I could continue running without putting too much strain on my knees,” she wrote.

Today Caroline enjoys yoga, running, and crossfit training. “I currently do Ring the Bell in Northfield and have just loved it!  It has pushed me in ways I haven’t experienced before through group classes. Ashley is a great coach that encourages us to push our limits and set personal goals.  Yoga keeps me balanced and stretched as well as relaxed. Probably my favorite thing to do is to run our golden retriever, Ruby. There’s just nothing like being outdoors to workout.  My fitness goal in life is to keep doing what I love most and most importantly, keep putting one foot in front of the other,” she summed-up.

Congratulation Caroline, and thanks for setting a positive example of wellness in our school community!
