2020 Senior Spotlight: Sydney Hubbard

In honor of the Farmington High School 2020 graduating class, over the next several weeks we will be highlighting a few of our outstanding seniors. These students have been nominated by Farmington Area Public Schools staff members for exhibiting hard work and pursuing their spark with passion during their time at FHS. Today’s Senior Spotlight is: Sydney Hubbard!
Sydney was nominated for her heart of service and willingness to help others. Beth Beckman said, “Sydney is one of those students that takes helping others to the maximum. I think the most recent example is coming with the recent outbreak of the coronavirus. She is my teaching assistant and before we started distance learning, she was already doing so much for me… It was such a relief to know that I had someone to support me in this crazy time. She is so trustworthy and genuinely does these things because she wants to help and has no other motive.”

Sydney has been on the girls varsity tennis team for four years and participated in Youth Teaching Youth for three years. She has been a part of Link Crew, Math Team, and National Honors Society for two years. “I am lucky enough to have participated in clubs in which my friends were involved, but I’m also fortunate to have made new friends through the clubs that I’ve joined,” said Sydney.

Outside of school she volunteers for projects like Fight for Air Climb, Toys for Town, Holiday Shop, and Feed My Starving Children. She also tutors for the school and sometimes helps with after-school credit recovery. “Being able to help others by volunteering or tutoring gives me an immense sense of accomplishment, and I am always happy to help those who need it,” she said.

Her greatest challenges and achievements? “I was very proud of myself for making the girls varsity tennis team my freshman year. I did not expect my level of skill was varsity-worthy, so I was shocked and euphoric to have made it. Being on the tennis team allowed me to meet some of my best friends. Throughout high school, I am also proud of getting on the academic honor roll for all three of my past years, and for achieving a 4.0 or above since my freshman year,” she said.

Sydney has lettered for four years in athletics, three years for academics, and was also in the art show for two years. Additionally, she earned a letter on the Math Team and a letter in National Honors Society.

Congratulations on an outstanding high school career, Sydney!

All About Sydney

Favorite Classes & Teachers

“I have many favorite subjects in school, including math, science, personal law, and anatomy and physiology. It’s so hard to choose my favorite course and teachers throughout high school. I’ve had so many teachers that I have loved and have helped me throughout my four years, some of which include Mr. Smith, Mrs. Meyer, Mrs. E. Beckman, and Mr. Kriegel.”

Favorite High School Memory

“My favorite high school memory is from my tennis team sections in my junior year. Our team played against Northfield and the score was 3-3. To advance further in sections, I had to win the match. In the end, I won the match against Northfield and our team was able to advance. The best feeling was winning the competition and having my whole team run onto the court screaming and surrounding me in a group hug.”

Future Plans

“I am currently deciding between Saint Mary’s University in Winona and Hamline University in Saint Paul. As for my major, I am going in as undecided, but I’m thinking of doing something in the medical field, with mathematics, or in criminology. I’m choosing to attend a four year university because it seems like the correct path for me, and I am going in with an open mind in hopes of finding the best fitting major and career for me.”

Advice for Future Seniors

“My advice for future seniors is to enjoy high school while you can because it goes by in the blink of an eye. Don’t focus solely on school work, but rather join some clubs, go to school events, don’t be afraid to make new friends, and take classes that interest you. Make the most of the time you have with your friends while attending high school because when you think back, it will be those memories that you’ll want to remember.”
