Senior Spotlight: Devon McCarthy

In honor of the Farmington High School 2021 graduating class, over the next several weeks we will be highlighting a few of our outstanding seniors. These students have been nominated by Farmington Area Public Schools staff members for exhibiting hard work and pursuing their spark with passion during their time at FHS. Today’s Senior Spotlight is: Devon McCarthy!

Devon was nominated for being a strong leader and a responsible student. He is a member of the Speech Team, Math Team, Marching Band, Jazz Band, LINK Crew, Soccer, Theater, Student Voice, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), and the National Honor Society (NHS). He has been Captain of the Speech Team, Trombone Section Leader, and a member of the NHS Executive Board. Outside of school he holds a part time job at Target and volunteers with various charities, like Feed My Starving Children. According to Beth Beckman, an advisor to the Speech Team and the NHS, “Devon is a fantastic leader…. His calm demeanor makes him a student leader that many students look up to. He is extremely reliable and will go on to do great things.”

More about Devon:

Favorite Classes & Teachers

“One of my favorite high school memories would be freshman year Speech sections. My duo partner (Sophia Trenary) and I made it to the finals round after competing in the normal three preliminary rounds. Standing on stage, in front of everyone, waiting for our names to be called with our placement, was such an exciting feeling. We ended up getting fifth place overall. Placing this well, and nearly making it to state as freshmen, for sure “got the ball rolling” for later success in these past couple years of Speech.”

Future Plans

“I plan to attend the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities to study Psychology and Sociology of Law, Criminology, and Deviance. Then moving on to gaining graduate degrees to go into the field of forensic psychology. Pursuing a four-year postsecondary education suits my personality and future career plans the best. Crime investigations and detective work has interested me since I was very little and have been an underlying passion of mine ever since. On top of this, understanding human behavior also piques my interest, so forensics perfectly combines these two worlds for me.”

Advice for Future Seniors

My advice for seniors is to not hold back. Take advantage of your opportunities and any activity/event that piques your interest and focus on your own enjoyment. Don’t do something, or not do something, to please others, do it because you want to. High school—senior year especially—goes fast, so enjoy it while you can.
