On Friday, January 19th all Farmington Area Public Schools 5th graders were invited to attend the 8th annual 5th Grade Career Fair hosted by Farmington Elementary School.

Organized by the school counselors of each elementary building, the career fair gives students a hands on look into the workforce world. Research indicates that children begin making decisions about future career options at a very early age, so this exposure to a diverse selection of careers allows students the opportunity to learn about a number of jobs they might not otherwise know about.

Professionals are gathered on a volunteer basis, and are made up of parents and other family members from across the district. This year, the 70+ presenters represented a variety of organizations including Farmington Police, Summit Orthopedics, CVS Target, MN Department of Natural Resources, Extreme Sandbox, and The Children’s Hospital. They hold job titles including, police officer, nurse, engineer, business owner, teacher, electrician, firefighter, locksmith, city planner, store manager and many more.

Before entering the fair, students participate in a career exploration lesson led by the school counselors or student advocates from each building. During this lesson, students engage in career activities and have the opportunity to complete an interest inventory. While walking through the fair, students work through a scavenger hunt and practice interviewing skills while meeting with each booth.

Students are able to leave the session with a better understanding of the connection between the things they’re learning in school and their future career choices. They also start making connections about the importance of school, being educated and what education or training it takes to have certain jobs.

Thank you to all who worked to make this event such a success!
