Last summer, the Farmington High School Art Department attended a week long Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) workshop at the Massachusetts Art Institute in Boston. TAB is all about guiding students rather than directing them. In a TAB studio students choose what to work on and determine the purpose of their work. Teachers demonstrate skills, guide problem solving and assist with finding inspiration when needed. You can learn more about TAB here.

Since the summer, FHS art teachers have continued to implement the TAB philosophy into their curriculum and courses. "It was an amazing conference.…We decided to show others what we learned in Boston and how we were doing it here at Farmington High School," said Dawn Cherwinka, FHS Art Teacher.

Ms. Cherwinka and her colleagues were invited to present at the Art Educators of Minnesota Fall Conference in early November. Their presentation was well received. The teachers are looking forward to continuing to use TAB to help their students and others around the state find success.
