Josh Budde and Belicia Pierre, both seniors at Farmington High School, recently took home awards from the 2021 South Suburban Conference Art Exhibition. Budde won the Award of Excellence, for insightful representations and examinations of feelings, systems, and objects; and, the Teacher’s Choice Award, which is voted on by all the conference art instructors. His piece, entitled Strike, is a critique of the American dream. Strike uses the form of the graphic novel to deliver critiques of immigration policies and carceral systems that overwhelmingly target Black and brown communities in the United States.

Belicia Pierre won an Award of Achievement for accomplished handling of media to expressively render her subject matter. Her piece, entitled Paradise, is an ostentation of peacocks gathered around a crystalline yet active body of water, calling to mind Persian mythology surrounding the mystical bird. With roots in Persian poetry, this visual allegory also speaks to our current climate crisis. The bird in the foreground gazes out at us, its eye staring wide and its mouth gaping in a call that seems to urge us to take action as paradise becomes increasingly turbulent.

Congratulations to Budde and Pierre, and to all ten Farmington High School students who participated in the SSC Art Exhibition, on a great showing. Jayna Carlson, Brandon Wilcek, Cheyenne Gilbert, Jennifer Bethke, Jordan Flemming, Ousa Hoeun, Sadie Krause, Wes Speakman, Belicia Pierre, and Josh Budde all submitted artwork.
