Claire Nelson     Farmington High School student, Claire Nelson and Farmington High School teacher, Rachel Baumann have been selected as member and adult mentor to the Minnesota Youth Council for the 2019-2020 school year! This year the Council selected only two students from our congressional district, which encompasses the southern Twin Cities metro area and contains all of Scott, Dakota, Goodhue and Wabasha counties. There were a record number of applicants this year and selection required completion of a competitive process for both the student and the adult mentor, including an application, interview and reference interview.
The Minnesota Youth Council is a platform from which members amplify the voice and power of young people in Minnesota. Members are trained in critical thinking, public speaking and leadership skills necessary to act as representatives of youth and change agents in their communities and across the state. The Minnesota Youth Council has been established by statue as the “voice of youth” in Minnesota. The group works closely with legislatures and high-ranking state government officials. The council is made up of students from each congressional district across the state of Minnesota. Both Claire and Rachel will begin their training on June 14 and look forward to an exciting year ahead of helping to promote student voice in policy formation at the state level.
