Smart Choices – A Healthy Eating Initiative in Dakota County

Smart choices

In February 2009, 43 schools in five school districts in Dakota County embarked on a unique initiative known as “Smart Choices.” Since then, four other school districts have joined the initiative reaching children in over 90 school buildings and nine school districts.

What is the goal of Smart Choices?
Smart Choices is designed to support the health of students and staff by creating an environment that encourages healthy food choices. All districts will begin with an
assessment of their school food environment to identify areas for improvement. Schools will identify ways to increase access to healthy and appealing foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, and reduce access to less healthy foods, such as soft drinks. Not only are well nourished children healthier, they also learn better. There is a Menu of Options available for making Smart Choices.

Why has Smart Choices been launched?
Research shows that nutrition, as well as physical activity, directly affects academic achievement. In addition, establishing healthy eating habits in childhood can positively impact health throughout life. The long-term impact will be improved health and a reduction in the escalating health care costs caused by poor diets.

What do we know about the diet of Dakota County students?
According to the
2007 Minnesota Student Survey, less than one in five students ate the recommended five or more servings of fruits and vegetables the previous day. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends 5-13 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.

How is Smart Choices funded?
Smart Choices and the Healthy Eating Dakota County project is funded by
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota through its Prevention Minnesota initiative and the Minnesota Department of Health's Statewide Health Improvement Program.
